Every Yogaasana (Pose) you perform needs to be done with a certain level of awareness, They are very subtle processes of manipulating your energy in a certain direction.

Asanas are performed while concentrating on subtle energies or with mantras, therefore they are not just a physical exercise.
Yoga is an Indian disease prevention technique. Yoga and Ayurveda are inseparable sisters. Both originate as part of a greater system of Vedic knowledge, Both Yoga and Ayurveda are based upon the principles of Trigunas (Sattva, Rajas and Tamas) and the Panchamahabuthas (earth, air, fire, water, space).
Both of these sciences have eight branches: Ashtanga yoga and Ashtanga Ayurveda. The two have a common understanding of health of the body being dependent on the health and balance of the mind. They share virtually the same metaphysical anatomy and physiology, which consists of 72,000 Nadis (subtle channels), seven main Chakras (energy centers), five bodily sheaths and the Kundalini Shakti (energy).
Yoga poses are great to strengthen and relax the body, but there's a lot more to Yoga than that.
Derived from the Sankrit word "Yuj" which means "to unite or integrate" Yoga is a 5,000+ year old Indian body of knowledge. Yoga is all about harmonizing the body with the mind and breath through the means of various breathing exercises, Yoga poses and meditation
Our mind is like a pendulum; swinging from the past to the future, going through regret, and anger to anxiety and fear, and happiness to sorrow. It is ‘Yoga asana’ that enables us to maintain equanimity. Yoga asana is not a mere workout or exercise!
